Accra, Ghana – Following the conclusion of the general elections, the Ghana Police Service has intensified efforts to maintain law and order across the country, working to ensure the safety of all citizens amidst reported incidents of post-election unrest.

ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Head of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, revealed that the National Election Security Task Force has been implementing a comprehensive security strategy referred to as the “PEP” framework. This strategy encompasses the pre-election, election, and post-election phases to safeguard the democratic process.

Pre-Election and Election Day Efforts

During the pre-election period, the police engaged in extensive stakeholder consultations, intelligence operations, and logistical support for the Electoral Commission. On election day, task force personnel were strategically deployed to polling stations and collation centers nationwide to monitor the voting process and deter potential disruptions.

Post-Election Measures

Now in the post-election phase, the police have increased their presence on the streets through joint patrols with the military and the deployment of intelligence officers in communities. These measures aim to identify and address emerging security threats. So far, 107 suspects have been apprehended in connection with acts of lawlessness, with 106 cases already being processed through the legal system.

“We have intensified joint patrols with other security agencies across the country, and we have also deployed our intelligence officers who are roaming through communities, looking for perpetrators,” said ACP Ansah-Akrofi.

To bolster investigations, a dedicated team is analyzing video footage, pictures, and other evidence related to reported incidents, with the goal of identifying and apprehending additional individuals involved in disturbances.

Collaboration and Public Appeal

In addition to enforcement, the police are prioritizing dialogue with political leaders and other stakeholders to foster cooperation and preserve peace. This collaborative approach underscores the importance of collective efforts in stabilizing the country.

“We are engaging party leaders and all other stakeholders so that we can work together to ensure the peace of this country once again,” ACP Ansah-Akrofi emphasized.

The police also cautioned the public against the spread of misinformation and disinformation, which could incite unnecessary fear and unrest.

“Let us continue to work together as a country to preserve the peace that we have enjoyed so far, so that together we can say that Ghana has indeed won one more time,” she concluded.

Commitment to Stability

The Ghana Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding democratic values by maintaining law and order, addressing incidents of lawlessness decisively, and fostering dialogue among key stakeholders. Through these measures, the police aim to ensure a peaceful and stable environment in the aftermath of the elections.
