Ghana Police Service Denies Allegations of Stopping Planned Demonstration by Democracy Hub
The Ghana Police Service has officially denied allegations made by the pressure group, Democracy Hub, claiming that the police had stopped their planned demonstration. In a statement released today, the Police clarified that the issue at hand was not about preventing the protest itself, but rather a disagreement regarding the choice of venue.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, stated, "For purposes of emphasis, we wish to state categorically that the Ghana Police Service has not stopped Democracy Hub from embarking on the planned protest. The only disagreement is on their choice of the Revolution Square, in front of the Jubilee House, as the location for the protest."
The Police further explained that they had engaged with the organizers and requested an alternative location for the protest. ACP Ansah-Akrofi emphasized that the Service is prepared to provide adequate security for the event, scheduled from September 21 to 23, 2024, once a new location is agreed upon.
"The Service has put in place sufficient measures to provide security for the exercise when a new location is agreed upon between the organizers and the Police. This has been duly communicated in a letter to the organizers, and we look forward to agreeing on a new location to enable them to exercise their democratic right to protest."
The Police also acknowledged that the High Court granted an order on September 18, 2024, prohibiting Democracy Hub from holding the protest at Revolution Square. ACP Ansah-Akrofi reiterated that this was the only legal limitation and that the Police remain committed to ensuring the demonstration proceeds peacefully at a different location.
In closing, the Police assured Democracy Hub of their protection and readiness to provide security once an alternative route or venue is chosen for the protest.
