Ark Foundation Ghana Launches Shelter Treasury Fund to Combat Violence

The Ark Foundation, a Christian mission-based nonprofit in Ghana devoted to protecting the rights of women and children, has officially launched its new Shelter Treasury Fund. This initiative aims to secure sustainable financial support for the foundation's shelter operations and related services, addressing the critical need for safe havens for victims of violence and abuse.

Established in 1995, the Ark Foundation has long been recognized as a beacon of hope for individuals escaping cycles of violence. In 1999, it made history by opening Ghana’s first shelter for abused women and children, setting a pioneering example in the fight against gender-based violence. Since then, the foundation has played an essential role in advocating for women’s and children’s rights, while providing refuge for countless individuals.

However, due to persistent funding constraints, the shelter was forced to close in 2016, marking a significant setback for thousands of vulnerable individuals who relied on its services. The absence of a secure shelter has left a gap in resources for women and children escaping abusive environments.

The introduction of the Shelter Treasury Fund marks a renewed effort by the Ark Foundation to reestablish and maintain its shelter operations, ensuring that those in need have a safe space to turn to in times of crisis. The fund is designed to provide consistent support for the shelter's infrastructure, operational costs, and the additional services required to assist individuals in regaining stability and independence.

Speaking about the fund’s launch, Ark Foundation’s Executive Director, Ms. Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable and distressed members of society. "We are dedicated to supporting the vulnerable and distressed in society, especially abused women and children,” she stated. Dwamena-Aboagye highlighted the importance of secure spaces, noting that shelters offer not only protection but also a critical opportunity for survivors to rebuild their lives.

Beyond shelter services, the Ark Foundation continues to work at the forefront of advocacy, public education, and training to combat gender-based violence and child abuse. Through community sensitization programs and legal advocacy, the foundation remains a key driver in raising awareness and encouraging a societal shift toward zero tolerance for violence.

With the Shelter Treasury Fund, the Ark Foundation aims to create a sustainable model that will allow it to provide lasting, reliable refuge and support to Ghanaian women and children in need, helping them escape cycles of violence and reclaim their dignity. The organization’s renewed commitment signals hope for a future where safety, support, and justice are accessible to all.
