IGP Urges Political Parties to Prioritize Peace and Nation Over Power
In a meeting held on November 21, 2024, in Accra, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, urged political parties to uphold peace and place the nation’s interests above personal or political ambitions during the ongoing election process. The meeting, which involved leaders of political parties and the media, was part of efforts by the National Emergency Task Force to ensure a peaceful election.
Dr. Dampare expressed gratitude to the political parties for their cooperation and trust in security agencies throughout the electoral process. He acknowledged their confidence in allowing security personnel to oversee internal elections and commended them for reporting unauthorized individuals impersonating security officers.
He praised the conduct of political leaders, particularly presidential candidates, during the campaign period, highlighting the relatively low tensions compared to recent elections in other democracies. “This is a new dawn of politics in Ghana. We are proud of you as politicians, and we are proud of you as Ghanaians,” Dr. Dampare remarked.
However, he called for a realistic approach to election outcomes, emphasizing that out of over 800 candidates, only 276 will emerge victorious. He urged political parties and their supporters to prepare to accept both victory and defeat gracefully, ensuring Ghana remains the ultimate winner. “Plan also to celebrate your possible defeat,” he advised.
The IGP reiterated the police service’s commitment to maintaining peace, security, and the rule of law throughout the elections. He assured that the police would enforce the law strictly and impartially when necessary. “We will be merciless in applying the law where it is required,” he stated, calling on all stakeholders to contribute to a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
The meeting underscores the National Emergency Task Force’s proactive engagement with political parties and the media ahead of Ghana's general elections, scheduled for early December. The discussions emphasized the shared responsibility of ensuring the nation's stability and democratic integrity during this critical period.
