MoGCSP Celebrates World Children's Day, Throws Support Behind Affirmative Action Act

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) commemorated World Children's Day with a spotlight on the theme, "Our Future, Our Voice: Listening to a Future for Affirmative Action." The event highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive policies and amplifying the voices of children and marginalized groups.

Children Take the Lead

A key feature of the celebration was the 6th session of the National Children's Parliament, where young Ghanaians were empowered to express their views on their rights and the critical need for gender equity. This platform demonstrated Ghana's dedication to involving youth in the decision-making processes that shape their futures.

Affirmative Action Act in Focus

Speaking at the event, Hon. Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere, Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South and Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Employment and Social Welfare, emphasized the transformative potential of the Affirmative Action Act. He lauded the Act as a critical tool for addressing historical inequities and fostering national growth.

"The passage of this act signals a deliberate effort to correct historical imbalances and ensure that no one is left behind in our journey towards national progress," Anhwere stated. "Inclusive development is not just a moral imperative; it is an economic necessity."

Empowering Women for National Development

Anhwere highlighted the proven benefits of women’s empowerment, citing research that shows how equitable inclusion fosters innovation, collaboration, and national prosperity. He stressed the importance of actively involving women in leadership and decision-making processes, arguing that gender equity is not merely a favor to women but an investment in Ghana’s future.

However, he cautioned that the success of the Affirmative Action Act depends on collective responsibility. He urged all citizens to challenge stereotypes, dismantle discriminatory practices, and champion gender equity for the greater good of society.

Acknowledging Support for Equity Initiatives

The Chief Director of MoGCSP, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, expressed gratitude to UNICEF and the World Bank for their unwavering support in advancing the ministry’s objectives. Their partnership, she noted, has been instrumental in driving progress towards an inclusive society.

A Commitment to Inclusive Development

This year’s World Children's Day celebration underscored Ghana's dedication to creating a more equitable society. By emphasizing the voices of children and the empowerment of women, the event aligned with the country’s broader development agenda. The discussions reaffirmed the government's resolve to place inclusivity at the heart of national progress, ensuring a brighter future for all Ghanaians.

With the youth actively participating and leaders reaffirming their commitment to equality, the occasion served as a powerful reminder of the collective effort required to build a fair and prosperous society.
