Paradigm Initiative and Partners Advocate for Digital Rights in Ghana’s 2024 General Elections
Story by Mizpah Ampem Darko.
As Ghana approaches its 2024 General Elections in December, key stakeholders are emphasizing the importance of protecting digital rights to support transparency and democracy. The initiative underscores the essential role of digital freedoms in promoting fair elections and an informed electorate.
In a recent gathering, stakeholders from civil society organizations, government, academia, media, and technology platforms discussed the threats posed by misinformation, hate speech, and potential internet restrictions. These issues, they noted, could erode public trust, influence voter behavior, and compromise the electoral process. The group was unified in its message: safeguarding digital rights is critical to informed decision-making and preserving electoral integrity.
On October 30, 2024, Paradigm Initiative (PIN), along with Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana), E-Governance and Internet Governance Foundation for Africa (EGIGFA), and Internet Society Ghana Chapter (ISOC Ghana), hosted the Ghana edition of the "Dream in Accra." This forum, titled the National Integrity Forum, brought together a diverse coalition dedicated to ensuring that digital rights are upheld in Ghana’s elections.
Madam Khadijah El-Usman, Regional Lead, noted that the participants committed to supporting a fair and transparent election process in Ghana. She emphasized that these digital rights protections would be crucial to the democratic integrity of the upcoming elections.
Through collaborations like these, stakeholders aim to strengthen Ghana’s electoral landscape, making it more resilient to digital threats while empowering citizens to participate freely and confidently.
