Ghana’s 2024 general elections have received high praise from the Commonwealth Observer Group for being peaceful, free, fair, and transparent.
Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi, head of the observer group and former president of Botswana, lauded the country for its composure during the electoral process. He described the elections as decisive and a reflection of Ghana’s strong democratic foundations, cementing its reputation as a beacon of stability in the region.
Expressing his admiration, Dr. Masisi thanked the Ghanaian government and institutions for their commitment to ensuring a successful election. He highlighted Ghana as a “shining star” in the region and pledged to share this democratic success story with other Commonwealth member states as a source of inspiration for Africa’s democratic aspirations.
In his remarks, Dr. Masisi also commended the National Election Security Task Force, led by Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akufo Dampare, for their effective coordination. He encouraged them to share their best practices with other Commonwealth nations to strengthen democratic processes globally.
This commendation aligns with the Commonwealth Observer Group’s history of recognizing Ghana’s electoral achievements. In 2016, the group similarly praised the country for its peaceful and orderly elections, underscoring its steadfast commitment to democracy and peace.
The group’s positive assessment of the 2024 elections reinforces Ghana’s standing as a model of democratic excellence and a leader in Africa’s democratic evolution.
