Accra, Ghana – As Ghana gears up for its general elections, the Ghana Police Service has announced comprehensive security and traffic management plans to ensure the safety of participants at the final rallies of the country’s two leading political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The rallies, scheduled for today, will take place at the University of Ghana Sports Park for the NPP and Zurak Park in Madina for the NDC. The police, led by the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, have conducted site inspections and engaged with party representatives to finalize the measures.

Key Security Measures

To facilitate smooth movement and ensure the safety of attendees, the following measures have been put in place:

Traffic Diversions:

Supporters of both parties will use designated routes to minimize congestion. NPP supporters from Adenta and Dome will access the University of Ghana campus through alternative roads, while NDC supporters from Tetegu and Dome will be rerouted to Madina.

Strategic Police Deployment:

Officers will be stationed at key points along affected routes to guide attendees, prevent disorder, and manage traffic flow effectively.

Roadblocks:

Roadblocks will be set up near the rally venues, including one in front of Zurak Park in Madina, to ease traffic and allow unrestricted movement for rally participants.

Party Cooperation

Both the NPP and NDC leadership have commended the police for their meticulous planning and pledged to ensure their supporters adhere to the guidelines. Grace Ansah Akrofi, Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service, expressed confidence in the arrangements.

“We are sure, and party representatives also agree with us, that if these guidelines are adhered to, both parties will hold their rallies peacefully, and their supporters will also be able to attend without any hindrances,” she stated.

Emergency Hotline

The police have urged the public to report any issues during the rallies via the Election 2024 emergency hotline: 0800311311.

Commitment to Peace

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its dedication to maintaining peace and security throughout the election period and beyond. By working closely with stakeholders, they aim to create a safe environment for all Ghanaians as the nation heads to the polls.

These proactive measures underscore the importance of ensuring a peaceful electoral process in a politically charged atmosphere.
